oh happy weekend 7.9.16

I'm now three weeks wed and still basking in the wedding glow, and I plan on keeping the party vibe alive as long as I can. This means the rosé drinking and happy hour hopping is in full swing. It helps that summer is officially here, which is my all time favorite time of year! Although now that we're a full five days past the 4th of July I start freaking out that summer is basically over. It's going by way too fast, as expected, and therefore I am determined to make the most of this special newlywed summer, with help from the NY Times Intentional Summer Series. Also in the works is my summer bucket list, for which I have 11 weeks to both write it and accomplish it, but who's counting...

Rosé all day. And why not all year?

Pick an island, any island

An inspiring MUST WATCH miniseries about new mom and Olympic hopeful Sarah Brown

A honeymoon to remember, not so fondly

The most gorgeous dress I've seen in a while

Give me all the ice cream

I made this for the 4th and it knocked people's socks off

What did quiche ever do to you? Why does tart get all the love?

My summer lunch staple (I recommend the oven over the toaster)

Maybe I should throw myself a New Last Name party. Can that be a thing?

oh happy weekend 3.11.16

After running my very first marathon last weekend, and making some major life decisions this week (both exhausting), I am ready for a low-key rainy weekend, a.k.a netflix and chill. We'll be celebrating my adorable pregnant friend at a co-ed baby shower, then G and I are having our relationship chart read by an astrologist. (Not going to lie- kind of nervous about this!)
Here's some weekend reading to catch up on:

I FINALLY got a Fiddle Leaf Fig, and now this.

How to build a billion dollar business (and other life lessons.)

Now I want to live on a boat!

Shoes made from sheep wool.

Why elephants don't get cancer.

Hair-spiration.

Home-spiration (in my hometown.)

Feeling the need to bake all things lemon.

Here are some of my fave finds from around the web:

My favorite stationery company is launching an apparel line!!

Need to make this for my fourth-annual HEART ATTACK installment. (See years one, two, and three!)

Gotta remember this game for future bridal festivities!

New dinner party salad to try.

My ongoing weekend project.

Pretty much my dream wedding.  (From the dress to colors to the food trucks!)

The Proposal

Gary and I joke about how differently we tell our proposal story, but here's MY version.
Back in early December 2014, Gary and I were doing one of our favorite workouts together, running the Larkspur Steps. This is a set of 148 stairs in downtown Larkspur, a popular workout and boot camp location for locals. This was also the place that Gary and I first hung out, just the two of us (romantic, huh?).  Over our almost four years together Gary and I have run the stairs well over a hundred times, sometimes alone and sometimes with the company of many familiar faces.
On that day in December Gary announced that we were going to do a timed test in about six weeks, giving us motivation to run the steps weekly over the holiday season. (The goal of the test was for him to PR and beat his record of 20 flights in under 25 minutes!) I rolled my eyes a bit at the thought of it but agreed to help him train during our joint workouts. For both of us, working out together in the mornings (whether at the gym or the stairs) is our very favorite time together.
The morning of January 13, 2015 was D-Day. Time to test the strength we'd built over the past month and a half. We met at the bottom of the stairs just after 7am as Gary was coming from training his 6am client.  I'd actually been up since 5:30am (just after he left for work), nervous about our big test. I used the time to hydrate and get in some carbs before heading to the stairs.
We did one warm-up lap to the top of the staris to set up our rocks, used to count how many flights we've run. Back at the bottom, we started our watches and sprinted off.
I kept up a fast pace for the first two flights, barely letting Gary break away. He commented "nice pace!" as he passed me on his way back down, motivating me to keep it up (but dreading that I had to keep this up for the remaining flights.) By my fourth flight up, Gary had already left me in the dust, and he was halfway back down by the time I was halfway up. As we passed in the middle he said, "I forgot to move a rock, can you move it for me?" Sure, I said. As I approached the top of the stairs I bent down to move a rock, and sitting there in line with the others was a very different "rock." I could not fully comprehend what was happening, and as I backed up from the ring in utter shock, I turned to see Gary on the top step, down on one knee.  He asked me to marry him and my first response was, "Are you f!@*ing kidding me?" I could not contain my tears and ran into his arms. He had to ask me if I had even answered his question, as I was blubbering. As I choked out a yes, he kissed me and ran into the bushes to grab glasses and a mini bottle of Champagne he'd hidden early that morning.
We sat on the stop step together sipping our bubbly (at 7am on a Tuesday!) for a good ten uninterupted minutes. I was wrapping my brain around what just happened, and Gary was basking in the relief of having his nervousness and stress over with. We could not have been happier.
I did ask him if we were going to finish the workout, as I still could not believe that he would foil the big test day. Little did I know, there was never going to be a test.  It was part of his big plan to make sure I'd be there on January 13th, my 10,000th day alive.  Instead, we went out to breakfast at Woodlands Cafe, where we had our first lunch date almost four years ago! It was a perfect day.

We had a little photo shoot to help us remember the moment. I love this artsy one that G took with the stairs in the background!

Look how dark it was! (It was also really cold and I had already taken off my vest after the last flight! Big mistake.)
Engagement selfie!

Oh happy weekend 1.16.15

Well who knew that this week would end up being the most exciting of my entire life?! I still cannot believe that I am engaged! (More to come on this!) Gary and I are on cloud 9 and are so grateful for all the love and well wishes that we've received over the last few days. And now, so ready for the weekend and time to bask in all this excitement. Maybe it will even sink in.

Ready to jump into the planning process!

Oh happy weekend 11.7.14

Fall is in full swing here in Northern California but I do appreciate that temps are still getting up to the high 70s. This weekend will be a bit of a college throwback at the birthday party of a fellow Bucknellian. Requested attire: Fall's Finest, including elbow pads, plaid and vests - what my preppy collegiate self was made of. Also on the agenda, a group dinner with close friends at this Bay Area landmark, and a T-Swift SoulCycle class!

Bay Area local? Get your craft on this weekend!

When the temps drop I must make this classic dish.

What I'm reading now

I never used to read multiple books at one time but there are just too many books on my list so these day's I've been doubling up. I usually pair a novel with a memoir or some other non-fiction, as I often read different genres at different times or in different locations, depending on my mood. Especially in the summer, everyone needs a good vacation read (in which case I recommend The Vacationers, not pictured here!) If you're need any fitness motivation you know which of these to pick up, and if you want a good cry.... read on to find out:

1. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt - This took me ALL summer to read but it's totally worth it. Plus then you can join the rest of the universe in saying you're reading "The Goldfinch."

2. Finding Ultra by Rich Roll - I am fascinated by ultramarathon runners and ultra-athletes. Roll's journey to overcome obesity (and much more) to become the athlete he is now (and always has been on some level) is at times completely unbelievable. It will certainly make you think, if Rich can do it, I can (whatever your goal may be)!

3. If I Stay by Gayle Forman - Take note: Do not try to read book this in public as I spent one full day doing - from airport to plane to train. I couldn't keep the tears from coming. That is all.

4. The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman - Take the quiz first, then you'll want to know more!

I am such a sucker for Wellies in all their colorful rubbery glory...and when they are pint-sized. I die.

It's my birthday weekend (yes that's a thing!) and while I haven't had a traditional birthday cake I've had nothing but sweets for 3 days now! (Cookies, flourless cake, multiple cupcake varieties...)  Of course there's still plenty of time in the long weekend to make a cake of my own... that way it's exactly what I want! :)

Enjoy these links for your long weekend!

If I had to pick my favorite cake combo I'd go with yellow cake and chocolate frosting. This one is supposed to be EPIC.

I love everything about this outfit (and put many of these items on my bday list)!

Not many 23-year-old's can say they've had this job!

A recognizable Marin native shares her local love-it list.

The best weekend of the year just came and went...and I'm already looking forward to 8/15/15!

Taking pinatas to a whole new level.

Everyone is talking about the 5 love languages. I need to take the quiz then pick up the book!

Enjoy National Toasted Marshmallow Day! These, these, and all of these looking ah-mah-zing.

Not toasted, but equally delicious: Frozen s'mores.

Oh happy weekend

Since my normal weekend indulgence - eating a lot of yummy food - is off the docket for the next few days due to THIS, I will have to bide my time with my other faves - bike-riding and
flower-shopping! In order to facilitate the body-cleansing process I am opting for a 90 min. massage tonight, yoga class this weekend, a few nice walks, and some good ole movie-watching.

Enjoy some of my fave links from this week.
Have a great one!

What I'm reading now

Most people who know me know that I love to read. My book lists are always growing and I cannot keep up! My favorite genre is non-fiction and I love memoirs and biographies. But I'm never opposed to a riveting novel now and again. I also love books about the social sciences.
Hence, I am very excited to have joined not one but two book clubs recently! One book club was started by a friend of a friend who is looking to meet more people in the Bay Area. It's a great way for us all to meet gals with similar interests and expand our social circle, all while delving into some literary works! The second club is a group of some of my closest friends, and I'm so glad for this monthly excuse to see them all more often!

1. Alison of Book club #1 assigned Rules of Civility by Amor Towles. I decided to start the book just three days before the meet-up! I spent almost an entire Saturday blowing through the book and I was riveted. It is a historical fiction about a twenty-something girl in New York City in the 1930's and it certainly struck a chord with me as a twenty-something today. I highly recommend diving into this love-triangle full of plot-twists that will keep you flipping pages.

2. Book club #2 was hosted by dear Amanda who chose Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. I actually ready Gone Girl months and months ago and absolutely could not put it down. I know its gotten mixed reviews from some as it certainly is a bit disturbing, which it is, but it is also quite fascinating and certainly a page-turner.

3. I recently finished Heads In Beds, having come upon it after reading the New York Times review. For the inside scoop on the hotel industry, pick up this memoir by Jacob Tomsky. His number one piece of advice: Whatever happens, be nice to the front desk agent.

4. In 2004 I spent time in the war-torn country of Bosnia-Herzegovina. My high-school teachers had set up a summer school there to reintegrate youth from the three waring ethnic groups. Having a first hand account of the people and the geography of Bosnia, Barbara Demick's Logavina Street brings back vivid memories. The lengths at which the interviewed residents of Logavina Street go to survive the four-year-long war will astonish you.

Note: This post was written over a year ago but my recommendations still stand!

Sunday Blues: Easter Edition

Easter morning as an adult doesn't have the same element of surprise and adventure as it did when we woke up to Easter egg hunts as kids. Oh how I miss that. I miss the tradition of it. And while I didn't get my act together this year my goal is to reinstate some traditions- be it with friends or family- for the holidays to come. A future tradition I'm dying to instate: holding a big fat fluffy Easter bunny like this one. How cute is this.

Oh happy weekend

Spring has officially sprung and I'm dreaming of a weekend getaway to Palm Springs. There's something about this rainbow place that seems like the ultimate escape.
This weekend I am celebrating a friend's birthday at a wonderful brunch spot on Saturday morning, then doing a long run of Sunday. There will probably be baking somewhere in there too.

Here's a roundup of great links this week:

If I'm gonna be renting...

Great beach packing list

Totally obsessed with these lately

Getting me psyched up for Hawaii!

Thinking of attempting these cookies for two

So Lucky to Live Here

Yes it's a joke from the Shit Marinities Say video (which I can't find right now), but I really truly mean it when I say it. I am grateful to have been raised in this beautiful county that offers unparalleled beauty outside every door and window. This evening I literally ran out the door of my house, partly in a fit and partly wanting to get in some cardio, and while not necessarily calmed or distracted by it, the vistas here have the great power to remind me to give thanks.
I grew up in Marin with a view of the majestic Mt. Tam. Given the topsy turvy turn my life has taken of late, the view has changed. The view is equally nice, but I still feel a certain amount of resentment about the change itself. That seems utterly ridiculous to admit.  My true solace is the fact that I find comfort in the beauty of the area and the beauty is readily accessible. While views alone don't help to fill the aching of the hole in my heart, they do remind me that there is goodness in life- a lot of it.

Sunday Blues: Retail Therapy

It's that time again. Sunday afternoon is melting into evening and I'm feeling the blues! Luckily I got a little retail therapy in this week- thanks to the J.CREW sales (and inevitable online window shopping)! A few of these items are recent additions to my wardrobe, a few are staples, and a few are on my lust-list...
1. Cosabella Never Say Never Sweetie Bralette- this is my all time favorite bra- I have it in at least three colors! 2. J.CREW Boy shirt in dots- just arrived on my doorstep! 3. Tieks foldable ballet flat- I want! 4. Chan Luu Wrap Bracelet- I got one for Christmas and I adore it! 5. J.CREW Matchstick Jeans- picked these up today in ankle length! 6. Lusting after this Madewell silk cami

Feeling ready for the week with my "new" blue wardrobe!

Sunday Blues: Blue Valentine

Every Sunday evening I get what I call the "Sunday Blues." I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling that twinge of sadness each time the weekend comes to an end. Ironically, I still felt it even when I didn't have a job to get up for on Monday morning. And even tonight, despite the exciting week ahead- Company Party and Valentine's Day!-  I still feel the need for a Sunday night pick-me-up. Hence, I'm instating a weekly column featuring blue-hued bits of happy! Tonight I treated myself to an indulgent and most effective blues-buster: a facial at Champagne Salon & Day Spa. It was absolutely heavenly and a perfect way to start off Valentine's Day Week. My skin is brighter and clearer and totally refreshed! Thank you to my brilliant esthetician, Kelly!
Speaking of the festive week to come, why not mix it up by adding some blues to those reds and pinks? I would gladly accept a bouquet of dusty miller and blue thistle in lieu of standard red roses, and that blue peacock lingerie, I'd wear any day.
But the true Blue Valentine... Mr. Gosling himself... is every girl's Valentine's Day dream-come-true!

1. Max and Cleo Peacock Dress from Viva Diva, photo via Modcloth 2. What a facial feels like via Champagne Salon & Day Spa 3. Knotty Valentine via Egg Press 4. Blue Heart Balloon 5. Bra and panties via Cosabella 6. Blue-Gray Bouquet 7. West Elm Pillows and Duvet 8. Ryan Gosling

Here's to a love-filled week!

Kelly
